Call for Submissions – Encore Gallery at TCA 2024
Submission Criteria
- Call is open to emerging and established artists residing within 50 miles of Taos County.
- Artists may not have exhibited with “TCA Exhibits” within the last 3 years.
- Accepted Media for the Encore Gallery includes: drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography or a combination of wall and sculptural works as deemed suitable to the venue. Installation works appropriate for the Encore Gallery space are also accepted.
- Artists must have a body of work to appropriately fill the Encore Gallery.
- Collaborations are welcome.
- Work must be original and prepared to hang.
- All work should be available for purchase during the exhibit.
General Information
- Exhibitions will run February 2024- January 2025
- Shows are between 4-6 weeks long
- TCA publicizes the event on website and all social media/e-newsletter.
- TCA prepares exhibition labels.
- TCA Art Committee may conduct a studio visit and work with artists to curate and hang the exhibition.
- Artists are expected to lead install and de-install .
- Artists receive 60% of retail sales price, artwork sold through TCA is tax free.
- Artists are responsible for shipping arrangements/expense.
- Artists are responsible for additional exhibition signage expenses beyond title of show.
- Artists will provide information & images for a press release six weeks prior to exhibition opening.
Submission Process – To submit work for consideration, there are 2 options:

Option 1: Submit a proposal in one email to Alice Morillon at [email protected] that includes these attachments: A single document with (a) a short exhibition proposal, (b) an artist statement/bio and 10-15 samples/images of work.

About the show:
During the summer and fall of 2022, artists Matthew Chase-Daniel and Jerry Wellman traveled in their mobile studio-gallery, Axle Contemporary, set up at festivals, fairs, farmers markets, libraries, schools, cafes, plazas and roadsides, and invited all who came by to sit for a photographic portrait. Each portrait features the subject/participant holding a small object brought with them that holds some personal significance. Each object reveals something about the identity of that individual, and anchors the photograph in a specific time and place.
Two copies of each photograph were printed immediately onsite in Axle’s solar-powered print studio. One was given, free of charge, to the participant, while the other was pasted to the exterior of the studio/gallery. The resulting is a portrait of 22 Northern New Mexican Communities As the artists visit more regions of the state with these projects and witness the distinct cultures and traditions of New Mexico, they share visions of the compelling contemporary individuals that make up this place and our shared humanity and our strength as communities.
The project took place in Los Alamos, Española, Chimayo, Pojoaque, Ohkay Owingeh, Truchas, Peñasco, Dixon, Taos, El Prado, Questa, Costilla (Garcia CO), Raton, Watrous, Clayton, Roy, Mosquero, Tucumcari, Las Vegas, Mora, Abiquiu, and Chama.
The exhibition will also include one large image made by digitally blending equal portions of every portrait in translucent layers. This image is part of the overall portrait of the community created by the project, and embodies the “e pluribus unum” (from many one) of the project title. This image will also grace the cover of a book which also includes all of the individual portraits, and essays by the artists. The book will be available at the TCA exhibition and at bookstores and libraries in the project area.
About the artists:
Axle Contemporary
Axle Contemporary is an art gallery on wheels. Founded in 2010 by Matthew Chase-Daniel and Jerry Wellman as a collaborative work of art and innovative vehicle for arts distribution, Axle is housed in the back of a custom retrofitted 1970 aluminum step-van. We exhibit installation art, performance, works on paper, including photography, drawing, and painting, and occasionally sculpture. Our mobility allows us to visit both typical art venues and unusual ones, such as schools, empty lots, restaurants, grocery stores, and city streets. The 6′ x 10′ exhibition space features high wood ceilings, exposed beams, track lighting and a magnetically based system for displaying unframed works on paper.

About the event: A benefit concert to celebrate TCA’s 70th birthday! 70 musicians/bands with all different sounds will each sing one song. From beloved Taos legends, local bands, youth, and amateur musicians, anyone can sign up to play a song on TCA’s mainstage.
One ticket is good for both nights, and folks can drop in and out of the theater, while enjoying refreshments from TCA’s curated selection and a handful of local food vendors, purchase commemorative posters or t-shirts, view the current art exhibits in The Encore and Stables. The whole TCA campus will be bustling with activity.
This event is going to be a community celebration of music for and by our community in support of the TCA, your local theater and art space where people can see film, art, music, magic shows, comedy and community events and more over 300 days of the year.
