“Epiphany” signifies in religion an intense revelation or an event equivalent to seeing God. In secular life the word has been trivialized to mean “I had an idea or insight.” This talk by Jimmie Killingsworth will speak of intense moments in the experience of the natural world to recapture the mysticism and wonder of epiphany in a nontraditional way.
M.J. Killingsworth, Professor Emeritus of English from Texas A&M University, is better known in Taos as a local musician, in such groups as Anam Cara, The Neighbors, and Fairy Jazz Orchestra. He is the author of many books and articles, mostly academic things, on such topics as American literature, rhetoric, and the environment. In his most recent books he turns his attention to nature writing and the human experience of the natural world. From that work arises today’s talk, “The Secular Epiphany.”
