About the show:
Listening.
Aspect/ focal range.
Collaboration.
As a multimedia artist primarily sculpting in marble, Barreto pursues the human form as a locus between identity, gender, and the inimitable joy of belonging. A parallel practice of abstraction is founded upon listening — investigating the musicality of repetition and multiplicity in open edition series. Brian’s current series explores transformational bodyscapes, migration, reliquary, longform engagements, and cultural fragmentation — often re-contextualizing historical canon into a contemporary discourse.
Locally, Barreto continues to build upon their understanding through research and artist interviews, ongoing curatorial and collaborative projects, teaching, forging their own tools, and developing more sustainable methods of art production in their studio art practice.
About the artist:
Brian Barreto was born in Milwaukee to an interracial marriage, their early days were immersed in 1970’s issues National Geographic that fueled an avid interest in the world and its peoples, while also nurturing a healthy wanderlust. Brian has worked in glass, ceramics, sound and performance, but as the son of a geologist they have always returned to stone. Barreto gravitates towards long-form engagements, some projects taking anywhere from nine months to a couple years, relationships that are increasingly important in our current era of immediate gratification and quarterly driven markets. Barreto asks – why do we continually try to expedite our experience, what is the calculus of ‘saving time’?
Having apprenticed in sculpture in Germany and the US, they furthered their studies at the University of Wisconsin. Brian’s work has been collected in the United States and Europe. Barreto also facilitates the Alluvial Project, an artist-run project space and gallery in Rinconada, New Mexico. Initiated in 2022, Alluvial is also host to the Exploratory Sculpture Passage/ AIR, a short term interdisciplinary artist residency program.
