April is National Poetry Month and Jazz Appreciation Month. And since the two art forms are naturally intertwined, April is the perfect time to celebrate both! Quincy Troupe, acclaimed poet, author and teacher, will perform poems and stories that grew out of his relationship with Miles Davis. The concert will be an exciting blend of spoken word and the music of Miles Davis– performed by Troupe, guest poet Paul Nelson, and the Doug Lawrence Quintet- featuring Paul Gonzales on trumpet. You’ll hear jazz and poetry in lively synergy– essentially “conversations” between brilliant and often funny poets and five truly great jazz players…. a not-to-be-missed concert experience!

In the 1980’s Quincy Troupe became known as a charismatic performer of his own poetry. He twice won the title of “World Heavyweight Poetry Champion” in head-to-head competition with internationally known poets who flocked to Taos for the World Poetry Bouts of the Taos Poetry Circus. Now Quincy’s back– for another “knockout” performance.

Troupe’s voluminous writings range from poetry to nonfiction and three children’s books. He co-wrote (with Miles Davis) the best-selling Miles: The Autobiography, and also wrote about their friendship in the book “Miles and Me”. Among his many poetry collections are Seduction: New Poems, 2013-2018; Ghost Voices: A Poem in Prayer; and the American Book Award-winning Snake-back Solos: Selected Poems, 1969–1977. His most recent book of poetry is Duende Poems, 1966–Now.

“Though he is capable of writing tender, meditative poems, the typical Troupe poem comes at the reader like a locomotive on fire, full of blazing and powerful imagery…. He is one of America’s few authentic jazz poets” –-San Diego Reader

“Troupe’s poems are exuberant and passionate… driving, syncopated rhythms and improvisatory riffs of colorful language.” —Star Tribune
