While questioning the nature of poetry may seem an esoteric task, remote from the actual work of writing poetry, it is an essential question, not least because it informs how we approach the task of writing. This question is of enduring interest to philosophers, but it is one that poets also consider in poems called Ars Poetica. This three-hour workshop will allow participants to consider the nature of poetry, language, and the purpose of poetry. We will read examples of Ars Poetica and workshop participants’ poems in terms of this discussion.
