This course is designed for anyone interested in exploring the space between the yoga mat and the meditation cushion. Many yoga students have tried to meditate only to discover they did not have the skills necessary to navigate these muddy waters. Slowly and mindfully over five weeks students will learn simple and specific instructions on how to sit in stillness and silence long enough to notice your sensing, feeling, thinking self and the conditions of the mind. During this course, students will discover skillful ways to respond to the difficulties and distractions that keep us from steadying our attention and gain valuable insight into the power of awareness.
Amani
Amani has been teaching yoga in Taos, New Mexico for 25 years and has grown to appreciate the contemplative practice that mindfulness on the mat has to offer. Her teaching guides students to shift from performing the pose to experiencing the pose from the inside out. This practice of inquiry and insight is the signature of Amani Yoga. She invites students to bring curiosity, creativity, and compassion to their mat as they sense, feel, and explore new ways of moving in the yoga poses and in their life. Her practice began with Richard Freeman and Ashtanga yoga and then shifted to Shiva Rea and Vinyasa Yoga and then Brian Kest and Power Yoga and then Rodney Yee and Iyengar Yoga and finally Kripalu Yoga where she received her 500 hour certification in 1997. When she is not in the studio teaching yoga she is a school counselor at Taos Charter middle school and a medical massage therapist. The other interests that feed her practice are hiking, gardening, meditating, and studying everything from Astrology to EMDR.
