Grupo Sangre de Cristo presents
Play reading: Flor and the Gift of the Blue Eagle
SUN, June 8, 3-5pm
Free & open to the public
TCA and Grupo Sangre de Cristo present a play reading of Flor and the Gift of the Blue Eagle by area resident Enriqueta Vasquez, a preview for their summer performances on TCA stage July 10-12 and July 17-19.
The play includes many elements, the main one, a blending of time- past, present and future. Topics of the timeless presentation feature war, politics, land, traditions, climate change, miracles and other points to ponder. Music and a three-generation cast add to the merriment of a family and community celebration in the production. Actors in the play hail from several New Mexico localities: Albuquerque, Bernalillo, Alcalde, Española, Questa and El Prado. The cast views the Table Read as an opportunity for the community to witness the process of the production that culminates in the full presentation of the play.
Besides the cast, several individuals work toward the ultimate goal of a full-fledged performance. Director/organizer Dr. Theresa (Tessa) Córdova earned a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of New Mexico. She organizes and directs the annual production of Los Pastores and has acted in and directed several plays. Playwright Enriqueta Vasquez wrote the column “Despierten Hermanos” for El Grito del Norte as a member of the Crusade for Justice during the Chicano Movement. Vasquez authored four books: ¡Viva la Raza! with Betita Martinez (published by Doubleday, earning Vasquez the Jane Adams Peace Award); Enriqueta Vasquez and the Chicano Movement; Women of La Raza; and Cuentos and Poetry. The 95 year-old Vasquez continues her writing career with her new book, Calle, a work of cuentos and short stories. Nicolas Medina-Gonzalez from Oakland, California, an Artist-in-Residence for the Paseo Project, works as the Artistic Director to complete the scenic backdrop.
Sangre de Cristo Liturgies was founded in 1981 by the late Arsenio Córdova to preserve the culture of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. A composer of liturgical music, he created the Grupo Sangre de Cristo component to foster the music and theater traditions in the area.
