Herbert “Buck” Dunton: A Mainer Goes West, an exhibition celebrating the legacy of the Taos Society of Artists’ (TSA) resident “cowboy painter.” Formed in 1916, the TSA founders, informally known as the “Taos Six,” also included Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, Ernest Leonard Blumenschein, Eanger Irving Couse, Bert Greer Phillips, and Joseph Henry Sharp. Maine native “Buck” Dunton (1879-1936) was known for his ten-gallon hat, cowboy boots and chaps, and for the portraits and landscapes he painted.
His work romanticized the geography and cultures of the Southwest, creating a mythology of the West.
