Casa Flamenca Presents: Arcanos

THU, June 19, 7:30pm

ABOUT THE SHOW

In this captivating flamenco creation, Casa Flamenca presents a mesmerizing show entitled “Arcanos,” which means “secrets.” This performance explores the aspects of our humanity that we often keep to ourselves—whether out of shame, a desire for privacy, or the weight of past mistakes.

As humans, we tend to be open about our positives, triumphs, and successes. However, when it comes to failures or things that go wrong, we often keep these experiences secret. This show encourages us to reveal our inner burdens, to live without shame, and to liberate ourselves from these hidden truths.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

José Suárez ‘El Torombo’

Francisco José Suárez Barrera, known as ‘El Torombo,’ is a celebrated street flamenco artist recognized for his dynamic twists, turns, and remarkable footwork, all delivered in a raw, untamed, and highly expressive style. He is not only a prominent Romani educator and activist but also a living flamenco legend. He began his journey at the age of seven, learning from esteemed masters such as Pepe Ríos, Isidro Vargas, Farruco, and Mario Maya. Farruco’s encouragement played a pivotal role in shaping his identity as “El Torombo.”

Torombo is also an educator and community advocate, pioneering efforts to bring flamenco into prisons and students with disabilities across Spain. He also founded the “Fuera de Serie” Project, which brings opportunities for artistic expression to underprivileged youth. Through his work, Torombo is creating pathways for future generations to explore and embrace the transformative power of the arts.

Carmen Montes

Carmen Montes has been described as “mesmerizing” by the Detroit Free Press and “beauty in motion” by the Metro Times. She is known as La Chispa (the Spark) for her passionate and vibrant interpretation of Cante Flamenco (flamenco song) and for her complex rhythmic zapateado. Born in Mapimi, Dgo., Mexico, Montes began her dance studies at the age of five in her native Mexico studying ballet, baile folklorico, and gymnastics. At age of 20, she moved to Michigan, USA where she started dancing Spanish classical dance with local instructor, Maria Del Carmen Montes. Eventually, Montes moved to Spain to immerse herself in the world of flamenco and was very fortunate to study with legendary families and artists of flamenco: Farruco Family, Carmen Ledesma, Concha Vargas, and Miguel Vargas. She has also studied cante flamenco with Esperanza Fernandez, which she feels is vital for dancers to do in order to understand the art form in a more profound way.

In 2010, Montes won the prestigious Kresge artist fellowship for Performing Arts. She is co-founder of the Center of Music and Performing Arts Southwest (COMPAS) where she continues to teach community workshops in Michigan. Valeria now serves as Executive and Artistic Director of Casa Flamenca in Albuquerque, NM where she is also a full-time instructor.
