This weekend, the D.H. Lawrence Ranch will be open to the public for the first time since 2008. We strongly encourage you to take this opportunity to visit and show your support for ongoing public access to this important cultural site.
The D.H. Lawrence Ranch, also known as the Kiowa Ranch, is located in San Cristobal, about 20 miles north of Taos. Under the 1955 Last Will and Testament of D.H. Lawrence’s widow Frieda, it was entrusted to the University of New Mexico (UNM) for the purpose of creating a public memorial to the world-renowned writer. However, due to a variety of ongoing concerns, the Ranch has been closed to the public since 2008 (without special dispensation from an office at UNM-Albuquerque).

For years now, the D.H. Lawrence Ranch Alliance, along with community stakeholders including the Healy Foundation, the Taos Community Foundation, and the Friends of D.H. Lawrence have been working closely with UNM to move towards a permanent re-opening of the Ranch.
The Ranch opening this weekend marks an important step in this process, and a strong showing of community support at the Ranch this weekend will be invaluable in helping to get it open to the public on a regular basis — plus, it’s a great day trip for locals and visitors alike!
