Thomas Mapfumo
and the Blacks Unlimited
The Father of Electric Mbira Music
From Zimbabwe comes the legendary Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited playing their their mesmerizing style of Shona music. Affectionately known at home as “Mukanya” (“Baboon”) and to the rest of the world as the “Lion of Zimbabwe’, Thomas Mapfumo has been a witness to and participant in history in his native Zimbabwe. From the bloody years of the country’s liberation war in the 1970’s, right through the present economic and political cries. Mapfumo has used his revolutionary, spiritually charged music to decry injustice and highlight the historical and cultural issues that underlie the news headlines. Mapfumo is a musical visionary and fearless social critic, and certainly one of the greatest African bandleaders of the past century.

Then on May 18th in collaboration with Moby Dickens, we will be hosting a book signing and lecture from Patrick Dawson, author of Vintage Beer. In Vintage Beer, Patrick Dawson explores the new horizon of aging beers to develop rich flavor profiles. Patrick shows readers how to recognize brews that are suitable for aging and to identify specific flavor changes throughout the aging process. With information on building and enjoying an aged beer collection, Vintage Beer is the go-to guide for any beer enthusiast looking to explore this exciting trend. This event will be commemorated by tapping two of our very own Taos Mesa Brewing aged beers: an aged Big Brown and an aged IHOP.
