About the show:
Back by popular demand following its world premiere in the spring of 2024, Flamenco Fandanguero: Primos de la Raza Cósmica returns to the stage this November, reimagined through a bold theatrical vision. This powerful work weaves together the intensity of flamenco and the communal spirit of son jarocho, illuminating the deep cultural ties linking these two musical cousins.
Rooted in mestizaje — cultural hybridity — this groundbreaking show explores identity, history, and belonging through dance, music, and storytelling. Inspired by the writings of Chicano authors Gloria Anzaldúa and Rudolfo Anaya, and created in collaboration with master artists from New Mexico, Mexico, Honduras, Argentina, Spain, and Zimbabwe, Flamenco Fandanguero honors tradition while inviting new and exciting cultural conversations.
Performed by Albuquerque’s own Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company alongside guest artists from Mexico and Spain, Flamenco Fandanguero is more than a performance: it is a gathering, a reflection, and a celebration of culture’s power to connect and heal.
Flamenco Fandanguero was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.
About Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company Founded in 1999 by Artistic Director Joaquín Encinias, Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company is the only flamenco repertory company in the United States.
