Based on the memoir written by Alexandra Fuller recounting her childhood during the Rhodesian civil war, modern day Zimbabwe, during the 1970s and 1980s. Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight depicts 8-year-old Bobo’s life on her family’s Rhodesian farm as the Bush War rages to its bitter end. Set against this violent backdrop, through Bobo’s perspective, we follow the family’s desperate attachment to Africa’s soil and the deep, festering scars of a war that reshapes both land and soul.
The title of the memoir and movie quotes the writer and humorist A.P Herbert whose original words were, “Don’t let’s go to the dogs tonight, for mother will be there.” Though open to interpretation, in this context, “going to the dogs” could mean succumbing to negative influences, self-destructive behavior, or the hardships and despair that are part of life in Rhodesia during the war and civil unrest. The title suggests a conscious decision to resist these negative forces.
“Davidtz has a clear directorial vision that comes through in how she hones in on the complexities of these characters and the chaos of the era. It’s a strong debut indicative of great potential for her next feature.”
– Abe Friedtanzer, The Film Experience
“Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight is the kind of bold swing with difficult material that does manage to earn your respect.”
– Robert Daniels, Screen Daily
