The cave art of Southern Europe is considered the first evidence of the remarkable creativity of our species. Psychoarcheologists have adopted the perspective that dreaming, rather than hallucinogenic trance, is a likely creative inspiration for some of this art. There are suggestions that dream-like trance states contributed to the creation of Archaic petroglyph images. Dr. J. F. Pagel will present evidence for the potential incorporation of dream imagery into rock art based on examples from Southwest European Cave Art (15-35,000 BCE); Río Grande Valley Archaic Petroglyphs (6000-22,000 BCE); and Río Grande Valley First Contact Petroglyphs (1500-1700 CE).
