A Special Taos Concert of the New Mexico Jazz Festival.
Led by GRAMMY® award-winning saxophonist David Sánchez, CARIB is a contemporary pan-African jazz ensemble deeply rooted in Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms. Their music draws from West African drums, melodies and rhythms from Haiti, and music from Sanchez’s native Puerto Rico, along with influences from New Orleans and the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina. All is expressed in the language of modern jazz,.
David Sánchez is widely recognized as one of the leading voices in jazz. Throughout his career spanning over three decades, he has masterfully blended contemporary jazz with Afro-Caribbean traditions, especially the rhythms of his native Puerto Rico. Sanchez has performed and toured with Eddie Palmieri, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Barron, Roy Hanes, Roy Hargrove, Pat Metheny, Lalo Schiffrin and many others. As bandleader, he has released numerous acclaimed albums, including Obsesión, Melaza, and Coral (a Latin GRAMMY winner). David’s 2008 debut on Concord Records earned the artist his sixth GRAMMY® award nomination. Two years later, Sánchez, Stefon Harris, and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah came together for the “Ninety Miles Project.” The successful album and documentary film were recorded in Havana and featured the three bandleaders and some of Cuba’s finest musicians. JAZZ Times music writer Michael J. West noted, “Sanchez, the saxophonist, is the real star: He’s exquisite on “The Forgotten Ones,” a ballad duet with Harris, and provides romance on “This Too” and dark intrigue on “Paradise Found.”
For their TCA performance, Sánchez will draw from his GRAMMY®-nominated 2019 album, CARIB, and preview music from their upcoming recording, exploring rhythms from Loíza, Puerto Rico, and San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia.
