Sunset Series No. 31
Feat. Richard Aufrichtig, Briana Marela, Lonnie The Cloud with Spudnick
SAT, June 14th, 7pm
Backstage @ TCA
The Sunset Series is a collection of intimate concerts showcasing a vibrant array of local and touring musicians, curated by Sarah Hart and Richard Aufrichtig. Together, Hart and Aufrichtig take a creative approach to presenting live music in Taos – originally at Hart’s now-shuttered Ennui Gallery and subsequently at the Taos Center for the Arts.
Richard Aufrichtig
Richard Aufrichtig’s Everybody On The Breeze may be only 18 minutes long, but its four tracks mark the beginning of a new phase in his musical career. Recorded primarily at his Taos, NM Heartbreak Hotel Studio in the aftermath of the breakup of the Big Numbers band, Everybody On The Breeze marks the first release of entirely-new original material from Aufrichtig since 2014 – and the first where he’s performed all of the primary instruments (vocals, guitar, bass, and drums) himself.
Known more in New Mexico for his community organizing and journalistic work, Everybody On The Breeze reintroduces Aufrichtig as a compelling voice in the high desert music scene. Culled from hundreds of songs written between 2021 and 2024, while Aufrichtig produced the “One More Song” radio show for KNCE Taos 93.5FM, this EP finds him extending the thematic graph beyond the scope of his earlier releases. Grief, addiction, climate change, adulthood, and spiritual transformation take the place of the expansive and sad love songs of Aufrichtig’s youth.
Known for his captivating and expansive live performances, Everybody On The Breeze introduces Aufrichtig as a producer and arranger in his own right – with delightful grooves and earworm riffs filling out each of the four songs. This EP also marks Aufrichtig’s third collaboration with Ben Lanz (Sufjan Stevens, The National, Beirut), who contributes additional instrumentation (horns, guitar, percussion, and piano) to the project and also mixed and mastered the EP at his Ploverland studio in Paris, France.
Briana Marela
Briana Marela is a Peruvian American composer, vocalist, and performing artist based out of Oakland, CA. Using her voice as a focal point, she makes use of visually engaging elements of tech augmented gestures and objects to compose and perform her music live. Her gestural and lyrical song performances draw from elements of both experimental electronic music and vocal driven pop music. Using a visual programming language and machine learning, she is able to make custom tools to create compositions with varying fixed elements that transition into moments of improvisation. She was most recently a spatial sound artist in residence at Audium in San Francisco for their residency New Voices IV, performing her multi-channel piece live every weekend from February to April 2025. She is currently a Montalvo Lucas Arts Music and Composition fellow. She received an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in 2020. Her newest full length release My Inner Rest, is due to be released on June 6th via AKP Recordings. Marela has self-released past albums, as well as releasing records with Jagjaguwar, Surface World and PIAPTK.
