A Thousand Places Left Behind: One Soldier’s Account of Jungle Warfare in WWII Burma By Peter K. Lutken Jr., edited by E. R. Lutken
A Thousand Places Left Behind recounts the adventures of Peter K. Lutken, Jr. who served gathering intelligence and engaging in guerilla warfare alongside the Kachins, our allies in WWII. Supported by maps and photographs, the book traces Lutken’s fascinating experiences from 1941-45. Many years later, he and other veterans of the Office of Strategic Services, OSS Detachment 101, initiated programs for the Kachins in 1990s to aid in health, education and farming which lasted until after his death in 2014. The book tells a remarkable story of bravery,
friendship, history, and the unbreakable bonds forged in times of war.
R. LUTKEN, a family physician on the Navajo Nation for many years, then taught science and math in rural Colorado.
