About the Show
A collection of collapsed wave photographs depicting 20.02 Hz encountering sunlight as observed through the medium of water.
“A moment is all time, an atom the universe.” – Sasha Vom Dorp
Artist Statement
I’ve made these photographs to better know my place in the universe. Our ability to travel the cosmos being limited, I’ve built a machine in an attempt to observe elemental transactions. I’ve created a mechanical solution to what is a metaphysical problem, forcing basic elements of perception – sound, light, and matter – into a single frame.
These are photographs of sound encountering sunlight as seen through the medium of water.
On one hand, I’ve staged common phenomena and on the other hand I’ve captured tiny cataclysms never to be repeated. I bring you evidence of a minute history, in which no instance is petty and every instant too complex to perceive in its entirety.
A moment is all time, an atom the universe.
These photographs aim to capture the beauty and turmoil that occurs inside the most pedestrian events. Sunlight bounces on water, sound waves march toward oblivion.
Artist Bio
Taos local Sasha vom Dorp is a self-taught multidisciplinary art. Born in 1972, he started making art at an early age and has been exhibiting his work since 1992. His works explore the rich territory invisibly folded into the most common elements before us. Through painting, kinetic sculpture, photography, and interactive video installations, he has explored elemental transactions.
For the last twenty years, Sasha has mined a rich vein of work at the intersection of light, water, and sound, creating an original technical and artistic vernacular all his own.
Deeply influenced by the Light and Space school’s artistic tradition, Sasha’s work blends his deep love for the natural world and modern physics.
He utilizes a custom-designed and built system to support his explorations allowing him to see, and record sound waves interact with sunlight, and matter.
From this, Sasha has created a series of interactive video installations and limited edition prints which have been exhibited and collected by private and corporate collections around the world. His work has been featured on PBS and published in the New York Times Art Section and other distinguished publications.
After living in the Philippines, Sweden, Mexico, Taiwan, and Los Angeles, he has returned to Taos where he works and lives with his wife and four children.
