And special guest, Tootie Heath’s young drum protégé, Luka Boyles
Lorca Hart, acclaimed jazz drummer and favorite son of Taos, returns to his hometown with Ralph Moore, one of the jazz world’s great tenor saxophonists. Moore is one of the hidden gems of jazz– in that he’s been there all along without many of us knowing it. Originally from London, Ralph began his US career with a five-year stint in Horace Silver’s band. Over his career he has performed, toured and recorded with jazz giants Freddie Hubbard, Billy Hart, Ray Brown, Roy Haynes, J.J. Johnson, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Hargrove, Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris and Kenny Baron, to name a few. He spent 15 years in Kevin Eubank’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno Band, and during that time became one of the most visible tenor saxophonists in America. Even though he had stepped away from pure jazz, the long-running gig gave him the opportunity to play with even more music legends like Al Green, Stevie Wonder, and Paul McCartney. Influenced by John Coltrane but with a slightly softer sound, Ralph’s lavish saxophone skills and obvious passion for tenor sax have always been undeniably felt in his music.
Lorca Hart grew up in Taos and loves to return for annual performances, friends, family and his many Taos fans. He was deeply inspired by teacher/mentor Albert “Tootie” Heath, to whom this concert is dedicated. Other influencers included Joe La Barbera, Charlie Haden, Wadada Leo Smith, and many others. Over his career, Lorca has focused on the art and craft of drumming, jazz history, and ensemble collaboration. He is equally a performer and educator, teaching at Stanford Jazz Workshop, Mt. San Antonio College, SF Jazz and many other musical clinics and workshops. Lorca has performed in a vast array of musical settings, working with many of the West Coast’s (and beyond) finest artists including Bobby Hutcherson, Ralph Moore, Carmen Lundy, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Jordan, Julian Lage, Hugh Masekela, Meklit, actor/musicians Jeff Goldblum and Peter Weller, Kenny Washington, Nicolas Bearde and the Cross Hart Jazz Experience. He also leads the Lorca Hart Trio featuring Josh Nelson on piano and Edwin Livingston on bass.
