The Wright Contemporary Gallery
Come learn about how the art world has changed in the 50 years Patricia Hamilton has been a part of it. She first opened her gallery in 1977 and represented primarily women, including Louise Bourgeois, Joan Snyder, Deborah Remington and Grace Hartigan. As she recounts in her recent memoir, The Blonde with the Balls, an art gallery back then was a family business, and the artists were a part of that family. Today things are radically different. Major galleries have expanded to different cities and participate in high-priced art fairs, and there is less and less room for mid-sized or fledgling dealers. It’s all about money. And if an artist doesn’t sell, they’re out. Art is no longer a family business, it’s big business.
