In early 1972, Aretha Franklin recorded a collection of gospel classics performed over two nights at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Sydney Pollack was hired to make a documentary about the event. Pollack neglected to provide “clappers,” the tools editors use to marry sound to image. For nearly 50 years, the documentary resided in film cans and frustrated imaginations. Thanks to the determined former Atlantic producer, Alan Elliott, it can now be seen.
