Kundalini (coiled serpent in Sanskrit) refers to the energy lying dormant at the base of the spine. In most people it never escapes the lower triangle or first three chakras. Kundalini Yoga is the system of awakening this energy and allowing it to rise up the spine to the higher, more spiritual energy centers. This is done through movements, pranayama, mantras, mudras, bhandas (locks), and meditation. The combination of all of these exercises can support activation of the glands and endocrine system, strengthening of the nervous system, expanding the lung capacity, and eliminating toxins in the blood. It may also be helpful in reducing symptoms related to depression, addiction, anxiety and insomnia.
