J. Matthew Thomas converts discarded consumer waste into constructed landscapes. Using the tools of the architect, he builds surfaces; and through a process of adding and subtracting, he creates new configurations of contemporary environments.

For this fall 2018 solo show, Thomas’s work reveals another departure in pattern making. For Muted, the patterns are moving away from a strict sense of control and order to a fractured and disjointed display.

Thomas explains, “Repetition is comforting, but nothing in life is static, nothing is pure, and we can’t take anything for granted. This unease of shifting global attitudes (political, environmental, socio-cultural) is exhausting. I found myself desperate to find a calmness in the chaos, and calmed by the monotone colors.”
