Fred Burns is pulling out all the stops with his upcoming show at the Stables Gallery. “Big Nudes and More” features large format nudes in pastel, charcoal, and graphite along with monumental heads that Burns considers to be a form of landscape painting. Some pieces appear to be clothed portraits but are actually day dreaming sequences where fantastic or magical elements have wandered into the space occupied by the live model. Other pieces form part of a time travel series in which Burns paints images “after Manet” or “after Botticelli,” traveling in his imagination back to earlier historical eras while at the same time pulling the past forward into his Taos studio.
