Taos Tigers Soccer Update

Here’s a quick update on Taos Tigers Soccer — catch some games this weekend at the sangre de cristo classic!

That’s right, fall is high school soccer season. Below, a photo from last night’s game vs the Capital Jaguars (Capital High in Santa Fe). On the left, that’s Coach Michael Hensley shaking hands with Jaguar Captain, and referees Greg Rach, Jason Stratton and Charles Baston preparing captains Junior Carlos Ruiz #9 and Senior Ian Sanderson #19 for the match. We lost last night, but hey, there’s a lot of season left!

The Tiger boys soccer team is ready to take on some tough competition this weekend. They are working through growing pains, having lost their senior goalkeeper. The Tigers are waiting on sophomore Nico Bartlett as a replacement, who needs to be cleared to play after competing for Questa last year while attending Roots and Wings. They’re putting untrained sophomore Tyrone Green in the goal in the meantime. He’s athletic and quick, but not a keeper yet; yesterday’s loss reflects that, with several goals against the Tigers in what would usually be a tight game against Cap.

The Tigers midfield and defense is strong, with Seniors Nico Cserhat, Noah Tonrey and Ian Sanderson holding down the D/mid and scoring power provided by Juniors Aidan Cserhat and Carlos Ruiz. The boys are working on their fitness these first few weeks of the season, as well as field vision, which they will need to out class some of this weekend’s competition such as Hatch and East Mountain.

You have a few chances to cheer for the Tigers this weekend, at the Sangre de Cristo Classic soccer tournament on Friday and Saturday (the 22 & 23). Taos Sports Alliance ED Cat Legere recommends catching the 7pm match on Friday August 22, when the Tigers go up against Hatch.

Added bonus: healthy delicious concessions will be available from Fruteria El Cañon, including fruit cups, aguas frescas, horchata, milkshakes, and yogurt granola fruit parfaits. Admission to the tournament is $5 per person per day.

Our boys won this tournament last year, so here’s hoping for a repeat! Here’s the full men’s schedule for the weekend.
